An Introduction to MYANMAR

Myanmar is a truly fascinating and spiritual country, largely unexplored by tourists. The country has reserved its culture and landscape, remaining relatively unchanged since the British colonial times, which is possibly due to the fact it was cut off from the rest of the world for many decades.

The country has a diverse ethnic makeup. The population is divided into eight ethnic groups and 67 subgroups, each with their own dialect and culture. 89 per cent of the population are devoutly Buddhist which is reflected by their gentle and welcoming nature. The country is known as the ‘ Golden Land’ because of the countless number of pagodas and temples, which dominate the landscape. Myanmar has a vast topography; it contains almost every type of environment you could think of from alpine country, grasslands and mountain ranges to jungles and coral reefs.

Time - GMT+61/2 hours (approximately 41/2 hours ahead of South Africa 

Language - The official national language is Burmese, however, it is estimated that there are 107 languages spoken. English is also widely spoken in major cities and tourist areas.

Entry Requirements - Passports must be valid for six months beyond the length of stay. Visas are required for South African travellers.

During the following holidays some or all businesses are closed and tourist sites will be busier than usual, therefore touring may be affected.

CITIES

YANGON

With a combination of old and new, Myanmar’s capital possesses a peaceful atmosphere with colonial boulevards and tranquil lakes. This charming city is thriving by night with bustling streets filled with stalls selling everything from handicraft to cigars.

BAGAN

The UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Bagan was once the glorious capital of the first Empire of Myanmar. It is home to over 3,000 ancient temples and pagodas and is also the centre for the manufacturing of lacquerware.

INLE LAKE

Stretching just over 5km wide and 100km long, this water paradise is inhabited by over 200 villages constructed on stilts. Visitors can witness the daily lives of the locals, including the ‘leg rowers’ who row their fishing boats with one leg.
